Overview and Projects Supported

Los Olivos Rotary has a long-standing commitment to serving both locally and internationally. The club has supported a number of international organizations for many years. Our club also actively seeks to support organizations responding to current flashpoints, including natural disasters and refugee crises. We also support the international work of local youth and club members travel to directly assist local organizations with hands-on projects whenever possible.  

 

Constru Casa seeks to improve the quality of life among Guatemalans who live in extreme poverty. They do this through their four community development programs:

– Construction of dignified concrete block houses

–  Construction of community buildings: schools, clinics, and community centers

–  A thorough 4-year follow-up program 

–  A healthy stove and water filtration program

Constru CASA collaborates with local organizations to identify families in need, and to help communities on their path toward a better and more sustainable future.

In keeping with our club's support of local youth, we also support students from Dunn School traveling to Guatemala to assist with a construction project each year. Upon their return, students  present what they have learned at one of our club meetings.  

Amarok Society (https://www.amaroksociety.org/). An Amarok Society school is where women find their true strength, and destitute mothers become community leaders. Amarok schools teach mothers to teach other mothers so that they can teach their children. This simple yet remarkably effective concept provides a revolutionary solution to a longstanding humanitarian problem – 1 in 3 children growing up illiterate.

Each of Amarok's schools teaches 25 mothers. 

Each of those mothers teaches at least 5 children. 

Once education feels truly accessible, it spreads. The children are so excited by what they're learning that they informally teach it to their friends, and almost double the total number of children Amarok reaches.

Center for Development in Central America-Nicaragua (https://www.jhc-cdca.org/). CDCA works to address poverty in Central America by listening to communities to identify their needs and then working to enable them to become self-sufficient. Most of the time what people need is access to resources and connections with those who can help, whether the community needs skills, markets, education, health care, special materials, or funds. 

WINGS Guatemala (http://www.wingsguate.org/). WINGS provides quality reproductive health education and services to underserved, primarily rural, Guatemalan youth, women, and men. 

I Care International (https://icareinternational.org/). Based in Morris, Illinois, I Care provides eye care clinics, medications, and eye glasses to underserved populations in Central America. 

Haiti Outreach (https://www.haitioutreach.org/). Haiti Outreach is dedicated to collaborating with the people of Haiti to work towards greater development of Haiti. Projects focus primarily in rural Haiti on sustainable access to clean water and sanitation, including hygiene education.
