Hello Los Olivos Rotary Club Members!

I hope this finds you well and “acclimated” to the new year – 2021. Your Olive Branch editorial staff took a hiatus from publishing a January 2021 edition so now I’m delighted to share our February 2021 issue with you.

As you know in the December Olive Branch I listed the things we as a club had been doing for our community – and in the midst of a pandemic we really did some wonderful things while remaining safe and healthy through it all. I’m super proud of our members who pitched in with our 2020 service projects and, for that, I thank you so very much.

Rotary District Update
The Club Presidents in our District 5240 have been given a directive that until the end of this Rotary year (June 30) all clubs will conduct their meetings virtually. That means our club will continue to meet on ZOOM until that time. It is wonderful to know that meeting virtually has not deterred our club members from gathering on screen each week to “see” each other, catch up on Rotary club news and enjoy our programs. Suffice it to say, my President year 2020-2021 will go down in club history as the “Year of ZOOM” where we met virtually for the entire 12 months!

Member Satisfaction Survey
You will be receiving a Member Satisfaction Questionnaire via Survey Monkey in the next few days and I hope you will take a few minutes (it is not long) to answer the questions. There will be instructions on the questionnaire as to how to complete and return.

Financial Update
At this time it seems fitting to give you a six-month update on our club financial standing. Currently we are down in our Annual Dues and club weekly dues income and we are facing RI and District dues to pay.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this Rotary year we normally pay a club meeting fee of $8 per week when we attend a meeting. This $8 fee each week or $24 per month ($8 x 3 meetings/mo) is what allows our club to pay its District and RI annual dues – and the dues total $4,608. These are mandatory dues for our club.

In addition, we have pledged $4,000 to pay to the RI Foundation Annual Fund and that must be paid by May. So you can see that our club meeting fees are very important. If you have not been sending in a check each month for $24 or a check covering several months of club meeting fees I encourage you to do so as soon possible. Send to: Los Olivos Rotary, P.O. Box 903, Los Olivos, CA 93441 Or you can now pay online through PayPal. Just click HERE. Thanks!

2021 Fundraiser
A small band of energetic members have been meeting to figure out a manageable wine oriented virtual fundraiser to hold on the usual Jazz & Olive date – the first Saturday in June . Many ideas have been considered but the most viable plan is being drafted now by John Mathews and his team. Stay tuned….

Let’s Have some Fun!
I have been thinking that since our club members are a competitive bunch we’ll have some fun contests and brain teasers at a few of our club meetings. The “contests” will be announced prior to the meeting so you won’t be caught unaware. I hear there could be prizes…

Stories
Welcome, New Member Mary Ann Norbom!
Mary Ann was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. She attended Penn State University. While still a student, she met and married Arne, a Philadelphia stockbroker. They later moved to California for a new adventure and warmer weather. Mary Ann flourished in the field of celebrity journalism as a writer and numerous magazines including People, Star, Redbook, and OK! and as a producer for Entertainment Tonight. Having the itch to live in the Santa Barbara area, Arne and Mary Ann built a house in Summerland and Mary Ann commuted to L.A. for work for over 14 years. When Arne faced life altering kidney failure, they moved back to Los Angeles so Arne could be close to his doctors.

After Arne died in 2010 Mary Ann bought a home in Solvang, an area that she and Arne loved to visit over the years. Mary Ann remained in the entertainment industry, working remotely for several years.Wanting to be more engaged in the Valley community, Mary Ann left her LA job and took a position as Life Style Editor for the Santa Ynez Valley News and concurrently enrolled in Penn State’s pioneering online campus and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 2016. She then went on to become the Executive Director of the Solvang Theaterfest. Now retired, Mary Ann is excited to belong   to our Rotary club and to get active in community projects.

Honoring Essential Workers
I’m excited to share that we have a community service project coming up that honors our often unsung essential workers – our local grocery store(s) staff that are always working to be sure shelves are stocked with food so that we can be sure to have what we need during this pandemic.

We will be setting a date to meet with each local grocery store manager. Several club members will present the store manager and store employees with a large poster expressing our club’s appreciation for the store employees’ service during the pandemic. Stay tuned for the date when we will meet with each grocery store to present the poster.
